What the LEIE Is
The LEIE is OIG's list of people and businesses excluded from Medicare, Medicaid and every other federal health care program. OIG adds names after convictions for health care fraud or patient abuse, license revocations, defaulted health education loans and other grounds set out in the Social Security Act. OIG lists every exclusion authority.
Federal health care programs will not pay for items or services that an excluded person furnishes, orders or prescribes (42 CFR 1001.1901). That includes work an excluded person does as your employee or contractor, and OIG can impose civil monetary penalties on a practice that employs or contracts with someone it knew, or should have known, was excluded.
How to Read a Result
- No match means the name is not on the list dated at the top of this page. Try former or married names and common spellings too.
- A match is not proof it is the same person. OIG's file has no Social Security numbers. Run the same search on OIG's own exclusion search, which can verify a match with an SSN or EIN.
- Reason is OIG's exclusion authority in plain words, with the code from the Social Security Act section beside it.
- Waiver means OIG waived the exclusion for a health care program in the named state.
Who Practices Usually Check
New hires before they start, current staff and contractors on a regular schedule, and vendors who bill or provide care for you. OIG updates the list every month, so a monthly check catches new names soonest. OIG explains the effects of exclusion and its screening guidance on its exclusions program page.
Where This Data Comes From
This search uses OIG's full LEIE file. Each month our server downloads the new file, checks it against OIG's monthly lists of new exclusions and reinstatements, and switches over only when every new exclusion is present and every reinstated name is gone. The date at the top of this page is the date on OIG's file. Searches are not saved.
